Sacramento Valley Salmon Returns
Sacramento Valley Chinook salmon population, river and watershed returns, hatchery production, natural spawning, and recovery efforts. The numbers below are figures discussed by the interviewee, James Stone, from the NorCal Guides and Sportsman Association. Some are reported counts, while others are estimates or projections.
Sacramento River – Overall Salmon Population
The Sacramento River system is managed using the Sacramento Index (SI), which combines four major river systems:
• Sacramento River
• Feather River
• American River
• Yuba River
Key numbers discussed:
• 396,000 fish: Predicted ocean abundance for the Sacramento Index.
• 122,000 fish: Minimum Sacramento Index return threshold.
• 180,000 fish: Preferred management floor, particularly during weaker stock years.
• 175,000–190,000 fish: James’s revised estimate of total Sacramento Index returns for the current year.
• 220,000–240,000 fish: Earlier, more optimistic prediction before the returns were better understood.
• 65,000–125,000 fish: Described as the range of consistent returns associated with a healthier Sacramento River system.
• 30,000 fish: Earlier preliminary estimate for the Sacramento watershed alone, including Battle Creek.
• 28,000–40,000 fish: Preliminary estimated range for Sacramento watershed returns.
