Drought: Driest January through February on record for several locations
The latest Drought Monitor places more than 40% of California in Extreme Drought (D3). According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, most areas are still experiencing D2-Severe Drought or D3-Extreme Drought conditions (Image 8). Due to the persistently dry pattern since early January, a 1-category degradation was made to parts of northern California. The ongoing drought classifications are due to significant precipitation deficits from the 2020 and 2021 water years and the persistently dry pattern observed in January and February this year.
