On the Sacramento River near Jellys Ferry Bridge, crews reintroduce salmon carcasses from Coleman Fish Hatchery back into the water to help restore critical ocean-derived nutrients to Northern California’s river system. In a KRCR TV news report video on their Youtube channel, a local fishing guide — Joshua Peard Fishing explains how salmon function as a keystone species, supporting everything from aquatic insects to orcas, and why their decline has ripple effects across ecosystems, agriculture and local economies. The video also explores how nutrient loss, dewatering during spawning and pollution impact river health—and what individuals and communities can do to help protect California’s waterways and fisheries.
NorCalGuides & Sportsmen’s Association guides and volunteers started this program in concert with Coleman National Fish Hatchery a couple of years ago.
